The IvySpires Standard — The Expertise Behind Every Session

The Standard is Not a Slogan

The Harvard Debate Council partnership gives Ivy Spires a credential. The coaching team gives it a standard. These are different things, and the distinction matters enormously for parents evaluating debate training programs.

A credential tells you where the curriculum comes from. A coaching standard tells you whether the curriculum is actually being delivered at the level it was designed for. Ivy Spires coaches are trained to do one thing above all others: give feedback that actually changes how students think — not how they sound, not how they gesture, not how they project their voice, but how they construct and evaluate arguments under pressure.

What Expert Debate Coaching Actually Looks Like

Expert debate coaching is not directing a performance. It is identifying the precise moment in a student's reasoning where clarity breaks down — and designing a practice intervention that addresses exactly that moment. When a student loses a cross-examination exchange, the question is never 'how do I help them seem more confident?' It is 'what was the logical gap in their response, and what drill will close it?' This level of diagnostic precision is what separates development from decoration.

The IB MYP Connection

Ivy Spires' curriculum is developed and delivered by certified IB MYP educators — which means the pedagogical framework is not imported from a debate tradition alone. It is integrated with the International Baccalaureate's approach to inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary thinking, and student-centred development. The result is a curriculum that feels coherent to IB students because it is built on the same intellectual foundations as the program they are already in — but that extends those foundations into the competitive, adversarial, pressure-tested environment that the IB curriculum does not provide.
