What This Tournament Is — and Why It Is Different

Most student debate tournaments in India are either school-internal events or MUN conferences. Neither carries a credential that travels outside the institution that organised them. The Ivy Spires × Harvard Debate Council Invitational on September 5–6, 2026 is structurally different. It is sanctioned by the Harvard Debate Council — the first HDC-sanctioned interschool tournament in India — which means every student who participates carries a verifiable, internationally recognised credential from one of the world's most respected academic institutions.

The Format — What Students Actually Do

The tournament runs British Parliamentary format across two days — the same format used in the World Schools Debate Championships and the format that Oxford and Cambridge Union debates follow. Teams of two argue prepared and impromptu motions across preliminary rounds, with the top teams advancing to elimination rounds. Judging is conducted by a panel of Harvard alumni, IB professionals, and university admissions experts — people whose assessment of a student's intellectual performance carries real weight.
