Why This Week and Not Next Week

The difference between registering this week and registering next week is not primarily administrative. It is the difference between arriving at August 28 with two weeks of structured preparation and arriving with one. In British Parliamentary format, two weeks of deliberate practice — specifically the opposition-first protocol and the points of information sessions described in the sprint guide — produces a measurably different level of competitive readiness than one week. The registration window is closing this week because the preparation window matters.

What Happens Immediately After You Register

Within 24 hours of registration: stream assignment — open or beginner — based on prior debate experience; the pre-tournament preparation guide with the daily practice schedule for the remaining days before August 28; the five-area topic framework with practice motions from each category; and a booking link for the two preparation sessions Ivy Spires provides to every registered student in the week before the tournament.

Within 48 hours: a direct message from the Ivy Spires coaching team with specific preparation recommendations based on the student's experience level and the time available. This is not a generic welcome email. It is a specific preparation pathway designed for the exact number of days and the exact starting level of the student who has just registered.

What the Tournament Weekend Looks Like Logistically

August 28 — Friday: Registration and briefing from 8:30 AM IST. Preliminary Round One at 9:25 AM. Preliminary Round Two in the late morning. Lunch break. Preliminary Round Three in the afternoon. Round Three results, feedback distribution, and day-end briefing by 6:00 PM.

August 29 — Saturday: Elimination rounds for teams that qualified from the preliminary rounds. Developmental bracket rounds for non-qualifying teams — structured as learning rounds with extended feedback rather than competitive elimination. All students receive written feedback from every round they participate in, regardless of bracket.

August 30 — Sunday: Semi-finals and Grand Final for qualifying teams. Closing ceremony: Best Speaker announcement, Best School announcement, HDC-sanctioned certificate distribution, and awards. The tournament closes by 5:00 PM IST.

The Certificate — What It Says and What It Means

Every student who participates receives a Harvard Debate Council-sanctioned certificate of participation. The certificate names the student, the tournament, the date, the format, and the HDC's sanctioning authority. It is suitable for inclusion in UCAS personal statements under Activities and Achievements, Common App activities sections, university CVs, and school academic records. For students applying to UK universities in the October 2026 cycle, the tournament certificate is available in time for inclusion.

Students who place — quarterfinalists, semi-finalists, finalists — receive placement certificates in addition to participation certificates. Best Speaker and Best School awards include trophies and citation letters from the HDC tournament panel suitable for submission as supplementary application material.
