For Students Already in the Academy — Your Priority Stack

Twenty-three days is enough time to build genuine competitive readiness if the preparation is specific and deliberate. The most common mistake in tournament preparation is volume without direction — doing many rounds without a specific focus on the weaknesses identified in previous feedback. The priority stack for the next three weeks: days one to seven on rebuttal precision, finding and naming the specific logical gap in an opposing argument rather than responding to the general shape of it. Days eight to fifteen on impromptu structure, building the habit of producing a clear claim-evidence-impact case in under ninety seconds from a cold start. Days sixteen to twenty-three on cross-examination, developing the single question that exposes the weakest assumption in the opposing case.

The Format — British Parliamentary, What to Expect

The Ivy Spires Invitational runs in British Parliamentary format. Two teams of two on each side — Government and Opposition — across three preliminary rounds and elimination rounds for the top teams. Motions are released fifteen minutes before each round. Speeches run seven minutes for the first three speakers, four minutes for the summary speeches. Points of information may be offered between the first and sixth minute of each speech.

The fifteen-minute preparation window is where most rounds are won or lost before they begin. A team that uses the window to produce a clear case architecture — one definitional claim, two substantive arguments, a mechanism linking each argument to the motion — arrives at the podium with a structural advantage over teams that use the window to accumulate material without organising it. In fifteen minutes, clarity beats depth every time.

What Judges Are Looking For — The Specific Criteria

Ivy Spires Invitational judges evaluate on three dimensions. Matter: the quality and relevance of the arguments and evidence deployed. Manner: the clarity and precision of the communication — not performance polish, the logical precision of how the argument is expressed. Method: the structural organisation of the speech and the team's overall coherence across their contribution to the round.

The single most common reason students do not place at their first competitive tournament is not insufficient matter — it is insufficient method. The arguments are present but the structure is unclear enough that the judge cannot follow the logical pathway from evidence to conclusion. The preparation investment with the highest return in the next twenty-three days is structural: practise producing three clearly signposted arguments in seven minutes, with explicit transitions and a summary that maps back to the case architecture.

For Students Not Yet Registered — What You Still Have Time For

The beginner stream of the Ivy Spires Invitational is specifically designed for students competing in their first British Parliamentary tournament. Motions in the beginner stream are accessible — chosen to reward clear reasoning rather than deep topic knowledge. The twenty-three days before August 28 are sufficient to prepare for beginner stream participation if the preparation is focused: ten to fifteen sessions on case architecture and signposting, five to eight sessions on point of information delivery and response.

What the Tournament Day Actually Looks Like

August 28: registration and briefing from 8:30 AM, preliminary rounds one and two in the morning, round three in the afternoon, results and feedback session in the evening. August 29: elimination rounds for qualifying teams, additional rounds for non-qualifying teams in a developmental bracket. August 30: semi-finals, grand final, Best Speaker announcement, Best School announcement, awards and close.

Every student receives written feedback from their round judges at the end of each day. This feedback is the most substantive expert assessment of intellectual performance most students will ever receive before university. It is specific, honest, and directly actionable — the kind of feedback that improves performance measurably for every subsequent round and for every high-stakes intellectual situation beyond the tournament.
